A walk on the wild side: Oryza species as source for rice abiotic stress tolerance Genet. Mol. Biol.
Menguer,Paloma Koprovski; Sperotto,Raul Antonio; Ricachenevsky,Felipe Klein.
Abstract Oryza sativa, the common cultivated rice, is one of the most important crops for human consumption, but production is increasingly threatened by abiotic stresses. Although many efforts have resulted in breeding rice cultivars that are relatively tolerant to their local environments, climate changes and population increase are expected to soon call for new, fast generation of stress tolerant rice germplasm, and current within-species rice diversity might not be enough to overcome such needs. The Oryza genus contains other 23 wild species, with only Oryza glaberrima being also domesticated. Rice domestication was performed with a narrow genetic diversity, and the other Oryza species are a virtually untapped genetic resource for rice stress tolerance...

Optimal culture conditions for the initial development of Ilex paraguariensis A.St.-Hil. explants Acta Botanica
Griebeler,Ana Gláucia; Consatti,Guilherme; Freitas,Elisete Maria de; Sperotto,Raul Antonio.
In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis A. St.-Hil.) is an economically and culturally important species. Because of the difficulty in obtaining plantlets from seeds, micropropagation has emerged as an alternative that could increase production. This work aimed to evaluate the effect that treatment with 6-benzyladenine (BA), at concentrations of 2.2, 8.9, and 20 µM and associated with naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA, 0.5 µM), has on the in vitro growth and leaf emission of I. paraguariensis nodal segments cultivated in 0.5 X Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium or 0.5 X Woody Plant Medium (WPM). The most efficient treatment was MS medium with 8.9 µM BA+NAA, in which I. paraguariensis presented greater shoot elongation and higher...

Physicochemical and nutritional alterations induced by two-spotted spider mite infestation on strawberry plants Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Livinali,Emanuele; Sperotto,Raul Antonio; Ferla,Noeli Juarez; Souza,Claucia Fernanda Volken de.
Background Strawberry is a pseudofruit mainly cultivated in temperate climate regions. Considering its high levels of ascorbic acid and phenolic compounds, the consumption of strawberry fruit can be beneficial to health. The Brazilian strawberry production revolves around 3000 tons per year, significantly influencing the food market and generating income to farmers. However, this production can be partially impaired by two-spotted spider mite (TSSM) Tetranychus urticae Koch infestations, due to decreases in the quality and quantity of fruit. Since there are no data in the literature about alterations caused by TSSM infestation in strawberry plants, our work aimed towards evaluating nutritional and physicochemical parameters of TSSM-infested strawberry...

Role of ferritin in the rice tolerance to iron overload Scientia Agricola
Silveira,Vivian Chagas da; Fadanelli,Cristina; Sperotto,Raul Antonio; Stein,Ricardo José; Basso,Luiz Augusto; Santos,Diógenes Santiago; Vaz Junior,Itabajara da Silva; Dias,Johnny Ferraz; Fett,Janette Palma.
Plants ordinarily face iron (Fe) deficiency, since this mineral is poorly available in soils under aerobic conditions. Nonetheless, wetland and irrigated rice plants can be exposed to excess, highly toxic Fe. Ferritin is a ubiquitous Fe-storage protein, important for iron homeostasis. Increased ferritin accumulation resulting from higher Fe availability was shown in some plant species. However, the role of ferritin in tolerance mechanisms to Fe overload in rice is yet to be established. In this study, recombinant rice ferritin was expressed in Escherichia coli, producing an anti-rice ferritin polyclonal antibody which was used to evaluate ferritin accumulation in two rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars, either susceptible (BR-IRGA 409) or tolerant (EPAGRI...
